Types of coffee beans

I have a cup of coffee right now. Coffee aroma touches my nose while I am drinking. Wow!, it’s like floating on air.

I consider variety brewing coffee drinks, adding with a little sugar, milk and cream or not. I am curious how different between each coffee drink in each coffee shop is, not only coffee flavors, colors, but also aromas. Though each cup of coffee is brewed with same recipe ingredients.

However as I am a coffee lover, Firstly I think not that what you tell. I wanna ask you, do you ever pay attention to coffee bean seeds? I mean types of coffee beans? Today, this secret will be revealed.

Types of coffee beans 


‘Cause the coffee trees are cultivated in different regions and countries. Many environmental factors such as geographic location, climate and water affects coffee bean flavors, colors and aromas. Yes, that is characteristic and quality variations they are. We name types of coffee beans by regions, country or first place that they are found. So in this world there are various types coffee beans more than 6,000 species including Coffea arabica, Coffea benghalensis, Coffea canephora, Coffea congensis, Coffea excelsa, Coffea gallienii, Coffea bonnieri, Coffea mogeneti, Coffea liberica, Coffea stenophylla and etc. Some became extinct long time ago.
Focus to the various types of coffee beans, nowadays they can be classified as 2 types. Arabica and Robusta which are popular and well-known by coffee drinkers worldwide.

Types of coffee beans 

Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.
The primitive specie of coffee tree. It is originally native to the Ethiopian highlands in Yemen, a part of the Arabian Peninsula. Which name “Arabica” refers to. And Arabica coffee is superior in quality.
Arabica coffee trees grow more difficult than other coffee species. It’s important that appropriate temperature (15 – 25 degrees centigrade) and environment is required for perfect harvest. They must grow in high altitude at least over 1000 metres (3,000 feet) above sea level with intensive climate conditions.
The Arabica coffee bean is larger and elongated, with a twisted groove. As you drink Arabica coffee you can have a rich smooth body flavor, a pleasant bitter aroma, a light hazel to reddish crema, slightly acidic and chocolately, which coffee lovers suppose for.

Nowadays Arabica coffee trees are cultivated in the tropical and equator of America, Africa and Asia. The large number of coffee productions are in Brazil, Kenya, Java and Ethiopia. By the way they are well-known as Arabica coffees including Costa Rican Tarrazu, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Jamaican Blue Mountain, Hawaiian Kona, Kenyan, Sumatra Mandheling and Sumatra Lintong, Mocha, Tanzania Peaberry, Sulawesi Toraja Kalossi.

Types of coffee beans 

Coffea Canephora, known as Coffea Robusta or Robusta coffee.
It is originally native to the western and central parts of Africa to Guinea, Uganda and the south of the Sudan.
Robusta coffee trees grow eaiser than Arabica coffee. They can grow in low altitude between sea level and 800 meters elevation ranges with warmer climate conditions. Highly resistant to coffee leaf rust disease and less care are requaired. So it’s easier to produce in a huge quantities without failure. ‘Cause their beans are more robust than other types. Which name “Robusta” refers to.
The Robusta coffee bean is smaller in size, rounder with a straight groove. Robusta coffee has a strong bitter flavor and less coffee aroma but double caffeine more than Arabica coffee. ‘Cause the lower Robusta coffee quality and larger quantities. So they are generally processed by commercial manufacturers such as coffee canned and instant coffee, etc..
Sure, better taste, and easier to drink they are sold as cheaper price coffee drinks.
Nowadays Robusta coffee trees grow in the eastern hemisphere. They are most commonly cultivated in West and Central Africa, South-East Asia and some areas of South America.

Arabica, What the most coffee lovers normally choose to consume. Arabica coffee has a superior taste, richer flavor and more delicate aroma but less caffeine than Robusta coffee and the other types. Yes, why Arabica is more expensive than. Commonly Coffea Arabica about 75-80% of the world’s coffee trade while the others is about 20-25%. Anyway blending Robusta coffee beans in commercial manufactories have a better taste. Easy to drink and cheaper price make Robusta coffees become popular beverages for coffee drinkers worldwide also.
